Most of the cellar spider species found in homes throughout the United States are not native species and have been introduced from other countries. They are also found outdoors and will frequently venture into garages to build their webs. Thus, the first reports of cellar spiders in Central Europe came mainly from wine cellars and buildings where trade goods were stored. ![]() They get in corners, behind furniture, in basements, bathrooms, and any other safe, secluded area in the home. Long-bodied cellar spiders were not originally native to Europe, but were introduced from Asia about 300 years ago. While they are commonly found in homes, they usually stay in one place. These spiders are found inside more regularly than many of the other spider species. Cellar spiders do not pose a threat to humans. They are not hunting spiders like some other species but instead spend most of their time on their webs. Cellar spiders are predators of insects and other arthropods (insects, spiders, crustaceans, millipedes, etc). The body of a cellar spider is between 6-10 millimeters in length, but their long legs can make them appear much larger. They are not aggressive and seldom bother humans. Their bulb-shaped abdomen is brown with white specks and dark lines and patches. ![]() The legs of cellar spiders are long in comparison to their bodies. These spiders have long and skinny legs with comb-like hairs. Common name: daddy long-legs spider, long-bodied cellar spider, skull spider. The legs are typically lighter than the body in color and have dark bands on different sections. They are not considered dangerous to humans, though they can give a painful bite. The body is about an inch long, and it has a bulbous abdomen. This arachnid can measure over 4 inches in total length. The dark fishing spider is the biggest spider in Maine. Cellar spiders possess a darker gray to brown or pale yellow abdomen (back section of a spider) and a cephalothorax (front section of a spider) that is lighter in color and much smaller than the abdomen. Can bite humans and cause a reaction similar to a bee sting. ![]()
